Augmented Reality ( abbreviated as AR ) refers to a technology that augments (i.e. makes greater) the real world by adding digital layers to it, making it more immersive. It is different from VR (Virtual Reality ) as VR makes a virtual world that is completely different from the real world while AR just overlays computer-generated graphics and audio onto the real world.
AR is often perceived as a future technology but it has been around for quite a few years now and is being used in various fields.
Present uses of AR :
- INTERIOR DESIGNING :
Augmented reality is used in interior designing to visualize and select appropriate furniture for a house.
Various stores like IKEA have made this possible by developing their AR-based apps that overlay their furniture onto your room. This gives a better idea as to what sort of furniture suits your home.
- GAMING :
AR is also used in developing AR-based games. The AR-based gaming industry is on the upswing right now. Many AR games like PokemonGO, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, Egg, etc. are quite popular all over the world.
With the help of AR, various imaginary and mythical creatures can be portrayed in the real world. This is what makes AR gaming very immersive.Other uses of AR include - Flight simulation for pilots, Military drills, digital mapping, etc.Image source: Google images - www.abiresearch.comPresently AR can be used with the help of some sort of display that captures the real world in real-time and overlays graphics on it, however, in the future, we can see various other devices like AR glasses and earbuds, and AR lenses which would directly portray visual data in front of our eyes.
This can be especially helpful while using navigation systems. It can also help in checking any notification or weather or other stuff for which we generally have to take out our smartphones. What do you think about AR?
